Comments by pf-roio.de:
The 2 disc set comes with a very informative
booklet with a discussion of the tour and shots of
the band. Pigs On The Wing (Part2) has a special
extended guitar solo. For this show only they played
as an additioanl encore, Careful With That Axe,
Eugene. This hadn't been played since Oct. '73.
This is the same show that has been immortalized on
The Abdabs: A Great Set RoIO. However, the problem
with that bootleg has always been that the set order
was messed up and the final encore of Careful With
That Axe Eugene, played for the first time since
Vienna on 10/14/73 was left out. In The Flesh
corrects those problems. The double disc on the
Great Dane label is one of the nicest I have seen
for Pink Floyd disc. The Springsteen discs on Great
Dane have always been excellent, and it is finally
nice to see some attention given to a Pink Floyd
disc. The sound is from the same tape as A Great
Set, but much clearer.
A release in the same format as 'Black Holes In The
Sky' (exellent throughout) GDR release the 1977
Oakland show from May 9th. This marks the first and
only time since October 1973 that PF Played Eugene,
here as an encore. Again an superb colour booklet
accompanies this release. GDR should rest assured in
the knowledge that they are surely the best b**tleggers
in town at the moment.
It seems that there are versions of Plays The
Animals that have SOYCD 1-5 truncated. But mine is
not. It features the complete show, and I prefer the
sound quality on it than on In The Flesh. So I would
say that if you are lucky enough to have the
untruncated version, PTA is preferable.
ITF is one of the candidates from GDR suffering from
laser rot. Mine had become "bronze" as is unplayable
(clicking noises, laser jumping).
There is a 'fade out' fairly early into SOYCD 8. It
sounds like the fella needed to flip the tape or
something, it merely fades out and then fades right
back in.
This CD has been one to suffer from degradation/browning
of the aluminium. The following information goes
some way to explaining the CD mix-up with Black
Holes In The Sky.
These are the matrix numbers of the GDR CDs 'In the
Flesh' and 'Black Holes In the Sky'.
Apart from the text 'MANUFACTURED...' and the long
number '99195...' they are:
old new Black 1: 1102-B 2411-B Black 2: 1102-A
2437-B Flesh 1: 1102-B 1418-B Flesh 2: 1102-A 2437-A
'Old' stands for the CDs that got a brown colour and
'new' stands for the CDs that were received from GDR
in exchange for the brown CDs.
The fade-out in SOYCD 8 is really weird--there's
actually no missing material at all. It fades back
up _before_ the point where it faded out, so there's
actually a few seconds of repeated material.
Much of the WYWH material is marred by interference
in the right channel on the CD. During quiet
passages the offending material is clearly
identifiable as the "Animals" portion of the show!
And yes, I'm talking about the actual CD itself, not
a tape made from it.
The sound quality of this recording is marred by a
constant 15750 Hz whine, the same as what comes from
a TV set (equal to the horizontal line-scanning
rate). Fortunately, if you have a parametric
equaliser it is easy to eliminate. This recording
can be further improved with a little EQ but it
sounds like it was recorded too hot - there is a
reasonable amount of distortion. That doesn't stop
this from being a good CD considering the age of the
recording, and especially since it contains the
complete show, and complete Animals and Wish You
Were Here.
I tend to agree with the other contributors, not a
bad CD concidering the age of the concert. If you're
looking for a Floyd concert with Roger, and like
Animals, then this one's for you. Crowd noise seems
low, but there is some distortion with the sound. My
copy also has the Animals playing in the background
during WYWH. Do all copies suffer from this
annoyance? My copy also is missing some text from
the intro in the booklet. During WYWH, at 1:17 and
1:24, my copy has a loud thump, like something fell
over? I'd recommend it.
