"On An Island" ist erst sein drittes Soloalbum.

Die ersten beiden, "David Gilmour" (1978) und "About Face" (1984), liegen schon mehr als zwei Jahrzehnte zurück und auch das letzte Studioalbum von Pink Floyd, der mehrfach mit Platin ausgezeichnete Bestseller "The Division Bell" (1994), hat nun schon ein Dutzend Jahre auf dem Buckel.

Trotz ihrer sensationellen Wiedervereinigung anlässlich des Live8-Konzerts steht eine dauerhafte Reunion von Pink Floyd in den Sternen. Umso willkommener dürfte bei den Fans das neue Studioalbum von David Gilmour sein.

Von den ersten Tönen der Soundcollage an, die "On An Island" eröffnet, hat man das Gefühl einer ganz besonderen musikalischen Erfahrung, die nicht nur jedem Vergleich mit den besten Arbeiten von Pink Floyd standhält, sondern die Klasse des Leadgitarristen und Sängers David Gilmour als Solokünstler einmal mehr bestätigt.

Hier offenbart er seine persönlichen musikalischen Visionen und eine Bandbreite stilistischer Elemente aus Folk, Jazz, Rock und orchestralen Passagen, wobei sein lyrisches Gitarrenspiel und seine unverkennbare Stimme sich wie ein roter Faden durchs Album ziehen.

Durch die Mitwirkung des renommierten polnischen Komponisten Zbigniew Preisner, der für die Orchesterarbeiten verantwortlich zeichnet, sowie durch die brillante Produktion (bei der Phil Manzanera, einst bei Roxy Music, assistierte) ist schon das Fundament des Albums ein Garant für Virtuosität.

Hinzu kommen prominente Gastmusiker wie David Crosby und Graham Nash (Harmoniegesang), Robert Wyatt (Kornett), Georgie Fame (Hammond), Jools Holland (Piano), Caroline Dale (Cello) und Alasdair Molloy (Glas-Harmonika).

Richard Wright (Hammondorgel) von Pink Floyd gibt sich ebenfalls die Ehre und eine der ganz großen Überraschungen ist die Mitwirkung des Gitarristen Rado "Bob" Klose, der zu der frühesten Besetzung von Pink Floyd gehörte.

Die Seele des Albums bilden natürlich die Stimme und die grandiose Gitarrenarbeit von David Gilmour, der jedoch Sorge getragen hat, dass das Album niemals zu bombastisch klingt, sondern in erster Linie ein sehr beschauliches Werk bildet, wozu auch die Lyrics einen entscheidenden Beitrag leisten.

Auch wenn David Gilmour an einigen Texten mitgearbeitet hat, stammt der Großteil der Lyrics von der Schriftstellerin und Autorin Polly Samson, mit der David Gilmour seit 1994 verheiratet ist.


Die fruchtbare Zusammenarbeit als Autorenteam hatte das Paar schon für Pink Floyds "The Division Bell" begonnen.
 
Die neuen Songs sind geprägt von gemeinsamen Erfahrungen, die unterschiedlichste Stimmungen einfangen: von dem bezaubernd schönen Titelsong "On An Island" (mit einer Gitarrenperformance, die direkt in den Kanon von Gilmour-Klassikern eingehen wird) über eher meditative Stücke wie "The Blue" und "A Pocketful Of Stones" bis hin zu den schwerblütigen Rock- und Bluestiteln "Take A Breath" und "This Heaven". Eine weitere Delikatesse ist "Red Sky At Night", ein intim wirkendes Stück, bei dem David Gilmour zum ersten Mal am Saxophon zu hören ist.

"On An Island" ist eine superbe Kollektion von Songs und Instrumentalstücken, die ihren Ursprung in einer Reihe von Konzerten haben, die David Gilmour im Jahr 2002 in der London Festival Hall gegeben hatte.

Gilmour war damals einmal mehr aus dem Schatten von Pink Floyd herausgetreten und präsentierte sich zu seiner eigenen Zufriedenheit nach wie vor in exzellenter Form.

The album will mark the release of David's first studio recordings since Pink Floyd's 1994 multi-platinum The Division Bell.

The press release makes a number of revelations about the album.

"From the first moments of the sound collage that begins On An Island, you know it's a special experience that not only bears comparison with the best of Pink Floyd, but also confirms their lead guitarist and singer as an outstanding solo artist.

In the spirit of intimacy, this album sees Gilmour's debut on the saxophone, as well as contributions by contemporaries from his pre-Floyd days.

"On An Island is a collection of songs and instrumentals that had its genus in the critically acclaimed 2002 London Festival Hall concerts.

Gilmour has stepped out of his super-group to discover he's still at his peak -- and he's rightly pleased.
