Former Pink Floyd vocalist/bass guitarist Roger Waters leads an all-star lineup 
of musicians and actors performing The Wall in its entirety at Germany's Potsdamer Platz on July 21, 1990. 

This mind-boggling logistical and technical undertaking to benefit the Memorial Fund for Disaster Relief occurred at the Berlin Wall site just eight months after 
its collapse.

Pink Floyd's original full-production 1980-81 "tour" for The Wall only included a few dozen shows in the United States and Europe, and this performance recreates it. 

Waters obviously serves as the concert's focus, and gives a solid vocal and theatrical performance. His Bleeding Heart Band anchors the music, and guitarists Rick DiFonzo, Andy Fairweather Low, and Thin Lizzy veteran Snowy White handle David Gilmour's work admirably. 

Special guests include Bryan Adams, the Band, Paul Carrack, Thomas Dolby, James Galway, Jerry Hall, the Hooters, Cyndi Lauper, Ute Lemper, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, Sinead O'Connor, Scorpions, East Berlin Radio Orchestra, East Berlin Radio Choir, and the Military Orchestra of the Soviet Army, along with conductor Michael Kamen who also worked on the original album. 

"The Trial" sequence features Marianne Faithfull, Tim Curry, and Albert Finney. 

Musical highlights include O'Connor and the Band on "Mother," Mitchell on "Goodbye Blue Sky," and, in particular, Morrison on "Comfortably Numb.

" All the main performers gather on stage for the finale, "The Tide is Turning 
(After Live Aid)," which appears on Waters' 1987 album Radio K.A.O.S. 

("Outside the Wall" — the actual end of The Wall — plays over the closing credits.) 
The Wall — Live in Berlin is an overwhelming, yet entertaining spectacle that reminds us of both the healing and the uniting powers in music.

FAKTEN UND HINTERGRÜNDE




Als 1989 die Berliner Mauer fiel, verschwand damit das sinnfälligste Symbol für den Kalten Krieg, für die Trennung von Kapitalismus und Sozialismus. 

Zwölf Monate später hat man das historische Ereignis mit einem der größten Rock-Konzerte aller Zeiten lautstark "untermauert" -- im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes: Am 21. Juli 1990 wurde auf dem geschichtsträchtigen Potsdamer Platz die Rock-Oper The Wall spektakulär in Szene gesetzt. 

Auf Einladung von Roger Waters kamen namhafte Musikgrößen an die ehemalige Grenze zwischen Ost und West. 

So wirkten an dem unvergessenen Samstagabend etwa Bryan Adams, Mitglieder von The Band, Deutschlands Musical-Export Ute Lemper, Paul Carrack, die damals angesagte Gruppe The Hooters sowie Fungirl Cyndi Lauper mit. 

Und auch Elektropopper Thomas Dolby, Joni Mitchell, Mick Jaggers Exgattin Jerry Hall, die Scorpions, Van Morrison, Sinead O'Connor, Orchester und Chor des Ostberliner Rundfunks, Flötist James Galway und die Marschkapelle der sowjetischen Streitkräfte kamen an den Ort, an dem einst viele Menschen ihre Fluchtversuche mit dem Leben bezahlten. 

Eine echte All-Star-Performance! Vor riesiger Live-Kulisse -- manche Quellen sprechen von 250.000, andere von 320.000 Zuschauern vor Ort und 300 bis 500 Millionen weltweit an den Fernsehgeräten -- spielte das Star-Aufgebot in der Nähe vom Brandenburger Tor Klassiker wie "Mother", "In The Flesh", "Another Brick In The Wall" etc. und umrahmte all das mit riesigen Bühnenbauten und raffinierten optischen Effekten. 

Nach der Ausstrahlung des Mega-Events hagelte es seinerzeit harsche Kritik.

Da war von lustlos agierenden Musikern und indisponierten Sängern die Rede. 
Es stimmt schon, einige Akteure hatten nicht ihren besten Tag erwischt, das kann auch die Filmaufzeichnung der epischen Großproduktion nicht verbergen.

Nichtsdestotrotz ist The Wall: Live In Berlin ein absolutes Muss für jeden Fan. 
Allein schon die visuellen Eindrücke des Monumentalwerks und das atemberaubende Live-Feeling rechtfertigen die Anschaffung. 

Und wann sieht man schon mal so viele Publikumslieblinge in einer einzigen Aufführung?
