David Gilmour was born
March 6th, 1946.
He is the youngest member of Pink Floyd, and joined the group
last.
He was brought in to cover for Syd Barrett after he was formaly asked to
leave the group.
Originally Syd was asked to do the writing for the group while Gilmour
played all the music,
but that didn't work well and Gilmour was brought in full time.
Gilmour was a friend of the bands, as well as an established guitarist
for the group "Jokers Wild".
When Dave was new in the group, he wrote some music and a few songs, but
with Roger Waters
wanting to take control of the group his writing was brought to a stop.
Since Gilmour was only the guitarist in the band, he did that very
well.
He is one of the most respected guitarist in Rock History, and well
deserves it.
Even during Waters lead of the band, Gilmour did all the guitar for
Floyd, but most noticably songs
like One of These Days, a solo part in the album
Meddle; Shine
On You Crazy Diamond, a long piece
on
Wish You Were Here; and Several Peices off the
Wall.
During the time Roger Waters was
writing The Wall, Gilmour released a solo album, name after
himself,
David Gilmour.
After Waters split after the
Final Cut, Gilmour and Mason kept going.
Few people thought that Pink Floyd could shine on without Waters,
but with Mason, and help from
Wright, Pink Floyd released
A Momentary Lapse of Reason, this album sold very well and
reached
#3 on the Pop Charts, and stays at #1 on the USA CD Charts.
During the seven year period which Pink Floyd didn't release
anything, Gilmour releases a solo album,
About Face.
Both solo albums did well.
Being in the top 50. In 1994 Gilmour, Mason, and reunited
Wright, released a chart topping album.
The
Division Bell reached #1 on the US charts and stayed for a few
weeks.
With the Floyd Spirit alive
again, Pink Floyd went on and released the live album
P-U-L-S-E.
In 2002, following a concert for
Robert Wyatt's Meltdown Festival, three semi acoustic concerts were
performed by David Gilmour and friends at
London's Royal Festival Hall, with one critic remarking that
a "reinvented rock god shines on as 21st century folk hero".
In July 2005, Pink Floyd reunited with Roger Waters for a one-off
performance at Live 8 in
London's Hyde Park, which was regarded by many as the highlight of an
astonishing show.
Gilmour hasn't done much since P-U-L-S-E, he has done several
interviews, as well as played some
songs at some small shows and meetings.
David's latest project is a new solo album,
On An Island.
Released on 6th March 2006, it is accompanied by tour dates in the US
and Europe.
David Gilmour, with help from David Bowie and Richard Wright, pays
tribute the band's founder,
Syd Barrett, who passed away in July of 2006 by covering two of Syd's
songs.
The first is the early Floyd tune, 'Arnold
Layne', a song the band recorded before Gilmour joined.
The second cover is a solo Barrett track 'Dark
Globe', originally from Syd's
The Madcap Laughs
album (which was produced by Gilmour!).
Features two versions of 'Arnold Layne' (with and without introduction)
and 'Dark Globe'.
Released on December 2006.
David Gilmour has announced the release
of Live In
Gdańsk in September, 2008 on Columbia Records.
The album was recorded during the last concert of Gilmour's 2006 summer
tour, which was held in
front of 50,000 people at the shipyards in Gdańsk, Poland.
The concert was the only occasion on
which Gilmour performed the tour material with an orchestra,
using the 40-strong string section of the Polish Baltic Philharmonic
Orchestra, conducted by
Zbigniew Preisner, who was responsible for On An Island album's
orchestral arrangements.
